Too often when we see something wrong with the world, our instinct is to try and change it. But we should be very careful about the endeavors we pursue that require changing the world – it is both incredibly difficult, and it’s also not entirely clear your changes will be an improvement. If you’re going to pursue that path, thing long and hard about it before you do.
In most cases, you’ll do better to see if you can change yourself, and your reaction to the world around you. Channeling Shantideva:
“Where would I find enough leather
To cover the entire surface of the earth?
But with leather soles beneath my feet,
It’s as if the whole world has been covered.”
Change yourself first
